Modern Security and Human Values: The Changing Face of Conflict

In this day conference, explore how modern security, conflict, the use of emerging technologies to counteract terrorism impacts on the state, civil liberties and the individual. With thanks for support to The University of Edinburgh School of Informatics, The University of Edinburgh Centre for Strategic Studies, Scottish Society for Computers and Law (SSCL), the University of Edinburgh SCRIPT Centre for IT and IP Law, and the Mentor Group, Boston, USA.

The Albertus Institute has assembled this group of international expert speakers:

Hon Richard Stearns who is a Federal Judge and has an extensive background in terrorism cases ranging from the Klinghoffer Case and IRA prosecutions to more recent Al Qaeda matters and the Boston Marathon Bomber.

Dr Laura Cleary who runs, amongst many other things, the UK's Defence Management in the Modern World Programme which supports defence diplomacy global.

General Zoltan Szenes who is a retired military officer in the Hungarian Army and managed the transformation of the Hungarian military from the WTO to NATO. He is currently Professor and Dean of the Institute for International Studies at the National University of Public Service in Budapest.

Richard Hoskins who is a retired senior official in the US FBI and has been involved in numerous terrorism cases both in the USA and abroad, including extensive service in Africa, South East Asia and the Middle East.

Andrew Dolan who is a former Army Officer, with experience of NATO and the EU. He runs a small consultancy firm which primarily conducts research and develops training simulation exercises for organisations involved in various aspects of security. His current research themes are security and the impact of emergent technologies.

The Conference will be chaired by Professor Juliet Kaarbo, co-director of the Centre for Security Research, The University of Edinburgh and The Revd. Dr David G Coulter, CB, QHC, Chaplain General to HM Land Forces.

The cost of the conference includes lunch and refreshments. Concessions only apply to students. There are also a limited number of free places for students.
